While there are some variations between the parental leave systems in Norway, Sweden and Denmark, one thing they all have in common is an emphasis on both parents sharing the leave.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Why is shared parental leave important? It promotes gender equality, reduces the impact that leave may have on the mother&#8217;s career and enables fathers to play a more prominent role in the early part of their child&#8217;s life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">In its report called <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/37HQbxo\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Who takes care of the children?<\/em><\/a> (Swedish: <em>Vem tar hand om barnen?<\/em>), The Swedish Social Insurance Agency (F\u00f6rs\u00e4kringskassan) writes that one of the goals of the Swedish shared parental leave policy is to encourage gender equality in the labour market.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Norway\u2019s original rationale was also to promote gender equality by encouraging more women to <a href=\"https:\/\/apolitical.co\/en\/solution_article\/norways-daddy-quota-means-90-of-fathers-take-parental-leave\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">return to the labour force<\/a>, shares Line Anita Schou,&nbsp;the country\u2019s Directorate of Labour and Welfare.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Shared Parental Leave Scandinavia<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">In Sweden, parents are entitled to share 480 days paid parental leave per child. Each parent can transfer part of their leave to the other parent if they wish. Ninety days are, however, reserved for each parent and cannot be transferred to the other parent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">In Denmark, parents receive 52 weeks of paid parental leave and can split 32 weeks of leave however they wish.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">In Norway, parents can choose 49 weeks (at 100% coverage) or 59 weeks (at 80% coverage).&nbsp;Both mother and fathers each receive 15 weeks non-transferable parental leave. Parents then receive 16 or 18 weeks of unallocated leave to share as they see fit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/f.hubspotusercontent30.net\/hubfs\/2798830\/All%20Markets\/Blog%20images\/parental-leave-family.jpg\" alt=\"parental-leave-family\" width=\"600\" style=\"width: 600px; display: block; margin: 0px auto;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Shared Parental Leave UK<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">In 2015, the UK government also introduced shared parental leave in the UK. Eligible parents can share up to 50 weeks of leave and up to 37 weeks of pay between them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">A study conducted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/business\/news\/shared-parental-leave-take-up-government-changes-a8855311.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The TUC<\/a> reveals that, unfortunately, of the more than 900,000 UK parents who were eligible for shared parental leave in 2018, only 9,200 parents made use of it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Could awareness be the issue? A survey conducted by employment website <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehrdirector.com\/features\/law\/parental-leave-secret\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Monster.co.uk<\/a>&nbsp;found that 50% of UK employees are unaware whether their company even offers shared parental leave.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The Daddy Quota<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">In Norway and Sweden, there is a so-called &#8220;daddy quota&#8221;, which is a part of the parental leave period exclusively reserved for fathers. If the father doesn\u2019t take his allotted period of leave, the family loses it. Thanks to the <a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/587763\/how-swedens-daddy-quota-parental-leave-helps-with-equal-parenting\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cdaddy quota&#8221;<\/a>, nine of 10 Swedish fathers now take leave.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Norway has seen similar success with about three-quarters of fathers take the amount stipulated in the <a href=\"https:\/\/apolitical.co\/en\/solution_article\/norways-daddy-quota-means-90-of-fathers-take-parental-leave\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">quota<\/a>, while one in five take a few weeks more than the quota.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehrdirector.com\/features\/law\/parental-leave-secret\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">46% of UK employees said<\/a> that employers should promote shared parental leave to encourage more men to participate in the program and drive gender equality forward in the workplace.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/f.hubspotusercontent30.net\/hubfs\/2798830\/All%20Markets\/Blog%20images\/worklife-balance.jpg\" alt=\"daddy-quota\" width=\"600\" style=\"width: 600px; display: block; margin: 0px auto;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Shared Responsibility<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">An article in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/lifeandstyle\/2019\/oct\/05\/shared-parental-leave-seen-as-weird-paternity-leave-in-decline\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Guardian<\/a> shares the experiences of one UK father who moved his family to Sweden. The young dad observes that, during the week, he sees more dads out with babies than mums and that, thanks to Sweden\u2019s daddy quota, it\u2019s just assumed that new fathers will be away from work for months, instead of days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The UK father also shares that Swedish dads are better at sharing child-rearing responsibilities as well as day-to-day duties, which \u201ctakes pressure off mums to be responsible for everything\u201d. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.5172\/jfs.2014.20.1.19?casa_token=877yX7qMwUMAAAAA%3ATtAfPXwWm6aJamxJXSuj1DukXpAK233SetsQzHg-gKUoRDlJmMDSGHV272vIn2cQcVj0qr4gB0OPKw&amp;\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">One study<\/a>&nbsp;confirms that there is substantially&nbsp;more equal division of responsibilities&nbsp;when fathers take more than one month&#8217;s&nbsp;paternity leave.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Want to learn more about parental leave in Scandinavia?
