This was also the common thread when Benifex Stockholm, together with Winningtemp, hosted a lunch seminar with Magnus Sverke, Professor of Work and Organizational Psychology at Stockholm University.<\/span><span> <\/span><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">During an inspiring and insightful lecture, we explored evidence-based research on what truly drives a sustainable working life \u2013 in practice. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">And the message was clear: everyone benefits from a healthy work environment. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What do we mean by sustainability in working life?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Magnus Sverke began by defining workplace sustainability. Sustainability is about the whole picture \u2013 both performance and wellbeing \u2013 and includes: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Motivation <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Job satisfaction <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Work performance <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Wellbeing <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Low sickness absence <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Physical health <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Recognition and pride <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Meaningfulness <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Engagement<\/span><span> <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Two perspectives we must hold simultaneously<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Traditionally, research on working life has followed two tracks: <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">1. Work environment focus<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Emphasis on stressors, risk factors, and workplace issues \u2013 and how these relate to stress reactions, ill health, and sickness absence. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">2. Organizational focus<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Focus on leadership, organizational design, and success factors related to job satisfaction, engagement, retention, and performance. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Magnus Sverke argues that we must keep both perspectives in view simultaneously. It is not enough to reduce risks \u2013 we must also actively build the right conditions for engagement and performance.<\/span><span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/2798830.fs1.hubspotusercontent-na1.net\/hubfs\/2798830\/CREA-2909%20-%20SE%20Blog%20images1.jpeg\" width=\"1900\" height=\"1200\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"CREA-2909 - SE Blog images1\" style=\"height: auto; max-width: 100%; width: 1900px;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Three fundamental human needs<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">A central part of the lecture focused on need theory and intrinsic motivation. For genuine motivation to emerge, three fundamental needs must be met: <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">1. Autonomy <\/span>\u2013 having influence and control over one\u2019s work<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px; background-color: transparent;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">2. Competence<\/span> \u2013 being able to use and develop skills, and receive feedback<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">3. Relatedness<\/span> \u2013 feeling a sense of belonging and connection <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">When these needs are fulfilled, intrinsic motivation increases, which in turn drives both performance and well-being. However, for this to be sustainable, individuals also need the right organizational conditions. This makes job design crucial. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Research shows that well-designed work should include: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Variety <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Clear identity (understanding one\u2019s role and contribution) <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Significance (experiencing the work as meaningful) <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Autonomy <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Feedback <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">When we connect this to the demands often present in work \u2013 demands that can be stimulating and developmental when reasonable, but risk leading to stress and ill health if not matched with the right resources \u2013 one thing becomes clear: the balance between demands and resources is central to sustainable performance. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">This is where the Job Demands\u2013Resources model becomes relevant. High demands are not a problem in themselves \u2013 but without sufficient resources, both engagement and health are eroded.<\/span><span> <\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Work is more than salary<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Magnus Sverke also highlighted Marie Jahoda\u2019s classic research on unemployment. Losing a job does not only mean losing income. It also means losing:<\/span><span> <\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Social connection <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Status and identity <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Structure in everyday life <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Meaning <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">The opportunity to use one\u2019s competence<\/span><span> <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">This reminds us how central the workplace is in people\u2019s lives \u2013 and the responsibility organizations carry in creating sustainable environments. It is about far more than fruit baskets and ergonomic chairs. The work environment is the sum of the organization&#8217;s conditions \u2013 how work is structured, led, and experienced every day.<\/span><span> <\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Everyone benefits from a healthy work environment<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Perhaps the most important insight from the seminar was this: a healthy work environment is not a cost \u2013 it is an investment. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">When we create the right balance between demands and resources, design meaningful work, and strengthen autonomy, competence, and relatedness, we enable:<\/span><span> <\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Stronger engagement <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Better performance <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Lower sickness absence <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Increased productivity <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Higher job satisfaction <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Greater retention <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Stronger advocacy and employer brand<\/span><span> <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">This is how we build sustainable organizations \u2013 where people both thrive and deliver results over time.
